What do you think is food? I am quite sure that the majority of people just consider food as something which provide us nutrients. Even I thought like that but Episode 52nd in Masterchef Australia Season 6 changed my thought about it.
In 52nd Episode, 4 cooks were required to make a special dish by using one of 4 sensory perceptions which were smell, sound sight, and touch. Surprisingly, 3 out of 4 cooks made a dish which was related to their past(memory). To be more specific, I will talk about a cook named Jamie. Jamie presented green tea-cure salmon with smell of smoke by burning small amounts of woods and fire crackling sound. He related this dish with his memory. Jamie went to the top of mountain with his friends for skateboarding and skiing and they all sat next to fire for dinner. He explained that the way he presented this dish and the smell of this dish reminded him of his past memory. In addition, before the judges try his dish he said "As you get through with the dish, lift this(it was a container which was full of wood smoke inside) then it should bring you back to sitting next to the fire". I just felt as if the dish would work as a time machine which would bring all the judges back to the past just like a cartoon. The angle of camera also made me feel that he was reminiscing his past. The camera zoomed in his face when judges were having his dish and his face was expressing some kind of longing. In addition, the way he presented his dish made the situation vividly like burning some woods to make smoke and make the judges feel as if they were actually sitting right next to the fire. In that episode, his dish was just more than a food, it was a time machine which brings us back to past memory.
I wrote about this topic in English class essay. As world entered the 21st century people have become more busy with their life and have no time to cook. It is good to live competitive. But I think we should have some memory which we can think of after we got old. Once the time passes, it will never come back to you in your life. What would be the difference between us and robots if we just have same routine of life everyday? and what would be left to us after we have lost irreplaceable part of our life which can't be bought with money.
<<I have also uploaded short part of video of Masterchef Australia which I was talking about!! Enjoy!>>
